The key animal companions from my webcomic Used Books. This is also the filler pages for my next printed book. I mostly use "pets" in my story to set moods and emphasize the character traits of the main cast. They also make for dynamic backgrounds and scene-setting.

Jiro is the main UB critter. He has sometimes been a plot device but usually just sets the scene as "the bookstore." He also ranges from affectionate to scaredy-cat when meeting new characters in the store, which can be a clue to the visitor's personality. My sister designed his appearance. I had a dozen very different potential Jiros in mind, but none of them looked like this Jiro. ;)

Puck is infrequent and mostly tags along when Alex is around. However, he doesn't listen to Alex at all. Puck is pretty hyper, scatter-brained, and has a short attention-span. I chose a Dalmatian because I was working in B&W at the time, and it seemed to look most striking. Alex was the very first recurring male character, but he hasn't been in any recent arcs. He (and Puck) will be back soon.

Molly lives with two kittens and possibly other animals at the moment. Her purpose is to emphasize the nature of the Ohtani household, now two over-the-hill empty-nesters living in a suburban ranch-style house. Molly might be a mixed-breed. She is elderly and overweight (and her keepers are on the heavy side too).

Hecate might be my favorite. She is the most intelligent and well-trained animal in the entire cast. Her loyalty is limitless, and she has strong intuition with her owner (a fairly nasty, ego-centric crime boss). She responds to his moods as well as his orders. She can be affectionate with visitors too, but only when taking cues from her master. When planning Raidon's dog, I had a long list of breeds I considered, but I narrowed it down to a Doberman for their intellect, loyalty, and also the beautiful svelte appearance. (She also serves symbolically to show Raidon's DESIRED relationship with Kaida, another dark and svelte character -- who is far less loyal and affectionate.)
